For most holidays during the school year, Barrie Central Collegiate’s Student Council plans a full week of spirit days. Most recently Barrie Central celebrated Spirit Week in February, ending with Valentine’s Day. They held a spirit-filled week featuring pyjamas, celebrities, plaid, escaping the cold, and pink and red. Each day, students were invited to participate by dressing according to theme. Through events over the lunch hour money was raised to support the Student Council.
I would say that pajama day is the most participated-in day of every spirit week, and it makes sense; what teenager wouldn’t jump at the chance to just roll out of bed in the morning and not have to change? On celebrity day there were people dressed as rock stars like Katy Perry. Plaid day is the easiest day of all, because everyone owns at least one plaid shirt. Everywhere you look, you see people dressed in plaid. Escaping the cold came as a little bit of paradise to most this year, as the weather outside has been very cold. There were Hawaiian shirts, shorts and flip flops everywhere! Pink and red day fell on Valentine’s Day. Love was in the air as couples walked around in their pink and red shirts! A Barrie Central alumni, Jordan, said, “spirit days are good for Central students because they bring excitement and enthusiasm. You can really see the spirit when you walk down the halls.”
During each spirit week there are events held at lunch for the students. Library Unplugged is my favourite because it shows everyone’s talent; students sign up and can showcase their talent in front of their peers. There is singing, rapping and sometimes the improv group even performs! There are also events like Bring Your Own Banana (BYOB) and Bring Your Own Mug (BYOM). If you bring a banana you can get ice cream and chocolate sauce to make your own sundae. On BYOM if you bring a mug you get free hot chocolate. There were also candy grams and buttons for sale at the last spirit week. These events get everyone involved and excited about school spirit.
So next time Student Council has a Spirit Week, be sure to get involved!
