Barrie Central Cast performing April 2 . . .
As the countdown begins to curtain, the Barrie Central cast of "Jack, or the Submission" is rehearsing tirelessly to put on the show of the season.
Since the beginning to the school year, Director/Producer, Frank Cunsolo and Stage Manager, Jessika McLaurin, have poured countless hours a week into overseeing all aspects of the show. Beginning with an open call for cast members in early first semester, Cunsolo and McLaurin hand-selected a diverse cast that would reflect the uniqueness of the famous Eugène Ionesco play.
The absurdist play premièred in 1955 and is the first of two about Jack and his family (the second being The Future is in Eggs). The gist of the narrative involves Jack's arranged marriage to Roberta. The play contains nonsensical exchanges and strings of clichés, and the sort of surreal imagery common in many of Ionesco's later plays.
The play has presented a challenge for the Central Cast because of the multiple dramatic layers, however with guidance the cast has whipped up a show that is sure to impress and entertain. Rehearsing three to four days a week since November, there is less than two weeks of finalizing the show, incorporating tech. - lights, sounds, etc. - as well as the set, props, and costumes. In addition to the initial work, the crew must also meet certain guidelines while setting up and performing at the festival, raising the stakes to a new level of performing.
The Sears Drama Festival, which began in 1946, is one of the largest dramatic festivals in Canada."The strength of the Festival is rooted in its many dedicated teachers and community members across the Province, who work to ensure that each District Festival is truly a celebration of theatre in their local community. More than 12,000 students and their dedicated teachers are involved annually in the celebrations, garnering some 500 Awards, including scholarships and bursaries. There are also opportunities to learn through networking, workshops and professional adjudication. Having three levels of competition - District, Regional, and Ontario Showcase - Central has dominated the stage numerous times in the last 25 years, going on to win countless awards and praises.
The first level of performance, is District. The Georgian Bay District Festival goes from March 30 to April 5, 2014 at Bear Creek Secondary School. "Jack, or the Submission," will be opening the show on Wednesday, April 2 at 7:00 PM. Tickets for the night are $5, or $15 to enjoy the whole festival. The Central community - staff, students, parents, and friends - are encouraged to come and show their support as well as watch the rest of the shows.
