If you’re ever feeling restless in class, get up and ask for permission to SPARK! SPARK is the program of integrating fitness into regular classes here at Barrie Central. It was started by Dr. John Ratey, a professor at Harvard. It is something that teachers have been using at Central for a while now and they can recognize when students need to get up and start moving so that they can refocus and regain their concentration.
Sparking is a very important part of the day at Barrie Central for most of the teachers. There are a variety of activities you can do to SPARK at Barrie Central. For example, you could play catch in the hallway, jump rope, or depending on the season you could do laps around the track or simply follow the red arrows around the hallways and get your brain moving!
Keesha Wright, a student at Barrie Central Collegiate also said “My classes SPARK on a daily basis and it really helps me get back on track when I am feeling like I can’t concentrate any longer.” The students love it!
Being a student myself I know that I can’t sit in a class for 75 minutes without getting bored and off task. After I take a quick lap around the upper level go back to class, I always focus much better.
“I think SPARK is a great idea,” said Ms. Campbell, a teacher at Barrie Central. All the students enjoy getting some physical activity and it works. Thank you, Dr. John Ratey, for bringing the SPARK program to Barrie Central Collegiate.
